The Death of Outpost

Over the past several months, the lands seemed to tame. The frequent attacks by the numerous creatures of the wild lessened drastically. The every day threats much of the populace had come to expect seemed to dissipate. Even the patrolling guards, hired mercenaries, hunters, and scouts who’d learned to navigate the hostile wildlands of Taldora were regularly reporting lack of action. It was as if the threat had simply vanished, like the land had finally surrendered to the invading visitiors.

Many found comfort in this change. They took pleasantries, establishing settlements away from Outpost. They’d retrieve water from the river, or participate in a hunt without worry of being swarmed by goblins. Compared to the constant danger many had faced over the past few years, it was turning out to be a time of peace.

Not all were put at ease by this. Taldora had proven on more than one occasion, the calm before the storm. And this calm was lasting far longer than was comfortable. They weren’t wrong.

When the storm came, it happened fast, it happened hard, and before anyone could understand it, it was over. The land had come to life, washing away the vermin of civilization that had so foolishly chosen to settle upon it. Outpost was destroyed entirely. Only crumbled rock and broken lumber remain of the once growing city that never made it out of its infancy. Not a single structure survived the onslaught.

As for the population, many perished among the destruction. Those few who survived were faced with a choice. They could flee and return to the lands they previously called home. Or they could stay and face whatever Taldora has in store for them next.

Those who remain have taken what paltry shelter they can find by settling in small camps along the ruined outskirts of Outpost. There is no guard. There is no security. And there is no patron to fuel the economy. Whatever the survivors have with them is all that remains, unless they can find more.

To that end, Welcome to the Death of Outpost. May you find whatever peace you can in this ruined world.
